Mushroom Science

We believe a truly good product is found at the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern proof. By blending Australian-grown Shiitake and Maitake extracts into our coffee, we are bridging the gap between centuries of Eastern wisdom and Australian soils.

Shiitake

(Lentinula edodes): The Foundation of Vitality

Originally native to East Asia, Shiitake has been a cornerstone of traditional wellness for over a millennium. While we grow our mushrooms right here in Australia to ensure peak purity and sustainability, we use the original heritage species to maintain their authentic biological profile.

Key Research: Immune Cell Proliferation

A landmark 2015 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition conducted a randomised dietary intervention on healthy adults. The researchers found that daily consumption of Shiitake led to a significant increase in the proliferation and activation of gamma delta T-cells and Natural Killer (NK) cells. These are the body's primary "scouts" and "defenders" that identify and neutralise external threats.

The Role of Lentinan

Shiitake is uniquely rich in a specific beta-glucan called Lentinan. Peer-reviewed literature consistently identifies Lentinan as a biological response modifier, meaning it helps "prime" the immune system to act more efficiently without overstimulating it.

Maitake

(Grifola frondosa): The Power of Synergy

Known in Japan as the "Dancing Mushroom," Maitake is prized for its complex polysaccharide structure. Like our Shiitake, our Maitake is the original species, cultivated under strict Australian standards.

Key Research: Enhanced Defense Mechanisms

Modern studies focus heavily on the D-fraction of Maitake - a highly bioactive compound. Research published in the Annals of Translational Medicine (2014) highlights that Maitake extracts significantly boost the activity of macrophages and promote the secretion of interferon-gamma, a protein critical for blocking viral replication within the body.

Why the Blend Matters

Science suggests that mushrooms often work better together. The 2014 study noted above specifically found that the combination of Shiitake and Maitake was more effective at stimulating a robust immune response than using either mushroom in isolation.

Our Standard: Purity and Potency

100% Fruiting Body: Most mushroom products on the market use mycelium (the root system) grown on grain. Research shows that the fruiting body (the actual mushroom cap and stem) contains a significantly higher concentration of beta-glucans and secondary metabolites.

Beta-Glucan Verification: We don't claim health benefits; but we verify them. Every batch of our Australian-grown extract is independently tested to ensure high levels of beta-glucans.

Clean Cultivation: Our mushrooms are tested for pesticides, heavy metals and environmental contaminants.
